- Development Dialogue MSc Systems Biology (14 Dec 2021).pdf (141.34 KB, PDF)… Adriaens BoE-member Robin Schormans Project leader (minutes) Agenda The programme management has three questions of which it would like the input of the accreditation committee: 1. Programme scope: Could you please elaborate on your views on how we can clarify the human health scope as well as the expected biology/mathematics/computational science proficiency on courses and programme description? 2. Student inflow and recruitment: Do you have concrete suggestions to improve our student’s … communication on career prospects. Groups of students who could also be targeted are those with a background in (bio)chemistry and physicist because of their ability for mathematical and molecular thinking, and students from technical universities who cannot pursue biomedical ambitions at their own institution. To reach the latter, strengthening research collaborations, inviting guest lecturers and exchanging interns are options. The panel sees the personal component of recruitment as important, as … the medical field, data science, industry etc.) when discussing ethical challenges. Moreover, ethics should be taught as an attitude towards science and (typical) uncertainty in research, to manage student expectations and fostering ethical behaviour. This requires practice, thus small assignments to make students reflective of their practice (e.g. by letting students unknowingly work with incomplete data) are welcomed, yet the panel recognises that teaching an attitude is difficult to incorporate …

- 01_CfP_MORSE2025_Track_Responsible_Leadership_and_Professionals.pdf (253.79 KB, PDF)… short-term firm benefits of shareholders rather than on long-term sustainable value creation for diverse stakeholders. Corporate governance for sustainable and competitive companies has therefore become a strategic issue for the European Commission. This includes better risk management and the provision of reliable corporate information that facilitates decision-making and influences firm behaviour. This requires responsible accounting and governance, and ultimately responsible finance as a catalyst for responsible business. We are just beginning to understand how these necessary transformations affect firm performance, organizational design, organizational culture, and corporate leadership and a range of questions remains for us to further explore. For instance, how can we train and prepare leaders and employees for situations and problems which by its very nature are ill-defined, dynamic, and complex or present wicked ethical dilemmas? Further questions are related to defining what are norms and values that …

- GROW 2018-2023_Summary.pdf (214.78 KB, PDF)… Oncology and GROW Reproduction) are collaborating strongly with other FHML Research Institutes and MUMC+ patient care centres and are well positioned in regional networks. GROW Oncology is part of the OECI accredited Maastricht UMC+ Comprehensive Cancer Center (MCCC), which collaborates in the OECI accredited Oncology Network SouthEast Netherlands (OncoZON). GROW Reproduction scientists are leading innovation in prenatal genetic testing, which takes place in the only licensed preimplantation … the care for (pregnant) women and newborns. The central position of GROW in regional networks and the strong collaboration with the affiliation professors provides a unique basis for impactful translational oncology and reproduction research. In this self-evaluation, we have reflected on GROW’s strategy, actions, and scientific and societal achievements in the period 2018-2023. The last six years have focussed on redefining what GROW aims to represent: a translational research institute which contributes to survival with preservation of function of patients with cancer (GROW Oncology) and the best possible start for future generations (GROW Reproduction). Collaboration and community building have been key to all our activities in the last six years. We have introduced the GROW community platform (containing …

We are proud to be consistently placed in the top 10 of the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings, while maintaining excellent positions in several subject rankings. How did we get there so fast, and what does this mean for our future? Without doubt, the founders of Maastricht University made a dar- ing choice when they started our institution by following a simple principle: do not be a copycat, but try to be different from your older and more established … to current-day chal- lenges that need to be addressed by a knowledge institution. In addition, the ambition was to become a truly international uni- versity, not only due to our location in the heart of Europe, but also building on the significance of the Maastricht Treaty (officially known as the Treaty on European Union) as a cornerstone for European unity and integration. Over the years, we have successfully built a world-class European-centred education and research offer taking a proactive role in fostering cooperation between European higher education institutions. This is why we define ourselves now as the European Uni- versity of the Netherlands. The use of the international classroom as an interactive space for students and professors to engage in intercultural dialogue helps us to make this con- nection and …
- gced_Narrative Report 2022-23 Critical Policy Lab.pdf (116.72 KB, PDF)… change and rising socio-economic inequalities. In order to find solutions to these challenges and work towards more inclusive and diverse societies, it is fundamental to critically deconstruct long- standing truths and create an environment where one can imagine new scenarios and possible futures, beyond the status quo. To really talk about social change and go beyond what is known we need to foster a social environment where we can talk about paradigm shifts, re-evaluate semantic and material … politics and our current structures of governance, revise processes of knowledge generation, and reactivate our senses to imagine alternative realities and futures. The UNU Critical Policy Lab was born out of the urgency to provide a response to this need, and out of the belief that this process should begin in the university setting - a construction site of ideas, but above all, of social change. Moreover, it also became an opportunity for students to experiment with the possibilities to … Did you achieve your objective and how? In order to do so, initially the Critical Policy Lab aimed to provide students with spaces for critical dialogue and discussion in the form of a series of lectures, panels, debates, classes and hands-on workshops. Such activities will revolve around the following main topics: 1. Decolonizing International Development 2. Alternative Economic Models - Degrowth 3. Knowledge Production - A Critical Evaluation 4. The role of Imagination for Social Change 5. …

- fpn_csc_petra_hurks_2.pdf (209.11 KB, PDF)… believed to be multifactorial, but these are still poorly understood. The majority of studies published are cross-sectional, studying the developmental history of the child with ADHD retrospectively, instead of a longitudinal research design. This study aims to test shared and unique involvement of PPFs for ADHD by use of an existing, longitudinal data set, i.e., the KOALA study (see www.koala-study.nl/koala-birth-cohort-study). In the KOALA study, we have followed (and continue to follow) … information on multiple PPFs (biological, cognitive, behavioral (incl. eating habits)) at several time points, both prenatal and perinatal. In 1,000 of them, we contacted their general practitioner and asked about diagnosis of ADHD and medication for this condition when the children were 8-10 years. As many as 8% of the children were reported to have a diagnosis of ADHD, and 7% uses methylphenidate, figures comparable to the Dutch general population. Based on these data, we can now study the relation between PPFs and ADHD and make strong inferences. For instance, we observed a strong association with pre-pregnancy BMI of the mother and that the prevalence is much lower in participants with alternative lifestyles. This …
