The authors first provide a general introduction to European legislation in the aviation sector as well as a historical overview of developments in that area, starting from 1987 when the EU agreed to liberalize the air transport sector and create one single aviation market. In the second part of this paper, the authors concentrate on Ryanair, as an example of a state aid beneficiary.
