Co-developIng a novel fRamework for assessing sustainability by integrating CE, LCA and SDGs indicators

CIRCLES

The project aims to fill the gap by joining the expertise and networks of Maastricht University (the Netherlands) and the University of York (UK) for co-developing a novel framework with public and private stakeholders for measuring their organizational and value chain sustainability performance, in particular reporting their progress and performance against different SDGs by integrating SDGs, CE and LCA indicators.

The focus for this pilot study will be on the environmental sustainability performance within the food sector with a possibility of extending this framework by integrating socio-economic sustainability performance and other sectors at a later stage through larger grant applications.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework addresses several global challenges including climate action, responsible consumption, and production, clean water, life below water, and life on land, among others. Various studies have examined SDGs performance at the national level, while organizational and value chain level have received very little attention in the sustainability literature.

There is little to no research on the integration of LCA and circular economy indicators in such a way that it helps organizations and value chains to report their performance against different SDGs. We argue that this is critical for accurately reflecting and reporting progress towards different SDGs.
