Career history

After studying law in Utrecht (propaedeutic exam: July 2002) and Maastricht (master of laws degrees in European Law School and Dutch Private Law: July 2008), I worked at the private law department as a PhD researcher and subsequently lecturer from 2008-2015. In December 2014, I defended my PhD thesis titled ‘Punitive Damages: the Civil Remedy in American Law, Lessons and Caveats for Continental Europe’. I am assistant professor of private law since February 2016.

From 2012-2023, I have published several contributions mainly in the field of punitive damages in Dutch and international legal literature. From 2024 onwards, my research focuses on the (Dutch) law of obligations in a broader perspective. I have a lot of teaching experience, and give several (skills) courses. I also coordinate the Dutch law of obligations as part of semester 4 in the bachelors Dutch Law and Tax Law.

My passion is problem analysis, judgment and decision making. I worked as deputy judge in the district court Limburg from May 2017 until May 2021. Since April 2022, I am vice-chair and member of the Board of Appeal for Examinations of Maastricht University. I am member of the BSA-/MOMI committee of the faculty since September 2023
