It is with great grief that we announce the passing of Athanasios Vlioras, 1st year student of our Bachelor Computer Science programme at the Department of Advanced Computing Sciences, Faculty of Science and Engineering, on Thursday 30th January 2025. Thanasis passed away at the age of 19.

Although he only started his studies in September 2024, he showed great promise in the field of computer science. He showed dedication and commitment from the start. His fellow students and friends remember him as a student wanting to share his knowledge on any field in computer science and especially logic. Together with his siblings he visited some cities in the Netherlands and Belgium and he enjoyed watching movies and series with friends or to talk about Greek politics with fellow Greek students. His presence and his love for Computer Science will be missed at DACS.

The faculty has set up a room for quiet reflection to allow friends, fellow students, staff and anyone else who would like to pay their respects to Thanasis. Everyone who wishes to leave a message of condolence can do so there as well, at PHS 1 in room C1.036.

It is conceivable that as friends, peers or staff, you are experiencing difficulties with this news, whether immediate or in the future, you can reach out to your student counsellors at DACS in their offices on the second floor (C2.012, C2.014 and C2.016) by stopping by, making an appointment or via mail. Additionally you can reach out to the student psychologists through the SSC information desk at 0433885388 or via the online appointment tool on the UM website: UM psychologists. The InnBetween student chaplaincy offers a listening ear to those in need. More information can be found here The InnBetween.
