UM celebrates Mother Language Day
21 February is the annual International Mother Language Day. The UNESCO has established this day to emphasize the importance of the language that children are taught by their parents from an early age on. Many of these languages are under pressure because of the dominance of the standard languages in education and administration. In Limburg this applies to the various Limburg dialects.
Veldeke Kring Maastricht wants to get a wide audience for this day. Maastricht University contributes to various activities on International Mother Language Day. With the motto “Gruuts op mien Moojertaol!” (“Proud of my Mother Language”) a series of activities is organised in the city. Click here for an overview of these activities (in Dutch).
