First Young Academy of Europe Prize for Rianne Letschert.
Today the first Young Academy of Europe (YAE) Prize was awarded to our rector Rianne Letschert. The YAE is a pan-European initiative of outstanding young scientists for networking, scientific exchange and science policy. The ceremony took place in Budapest at a joint annual meeting with the Academia Europaea (AE) and the European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities (ALLEA).
Letschert received the prize for her outstanding academic career, working in the field of international law, with a focus on minority rights and human rights. She has been an active member of the Dutch Young Academy since 2013 (De Jonge Akademie), becoming its chairperson in 2015, In 2016 she became the youngest female rector ever appointed at a Dutch university. She is a vocal and active advocate of science communication for young people, and for promoting diversity. By awarding her the YAE Prize, YAE will make a clear statement in respect of the need to have excellent women academics present at the top of academic research, management, and policy making. Rianne Letschert felt highly honoured to have been awarded this prize.
