17 June 'Towards a Euregional market of transactions in immovable property and hypothecary financing'

On 17 June 2016, Maastricht University’s interdisciplinary Institute for Transnational and Euregional cooperation and Mobility / ITEM organised a workshop on the Euregional market of transactions in immovable property and hypothecary financing.

After more than half a century of European integration, this market still is in its infancy. The transfer of immovable property is often a matter that only involves national lawyers and notaries. Also cross-border hypothecary financing rarely occurs. However, consumers and companies can greatly profit from the development of an integrated market.

The workshop focussed on the practical aspects of cross-border immovable property transactions and the financing thereof within the Euregion Limburg and was intended to get an insight into how notaries, banks and land registries collaborate at this moment to cross-border transfer and finance immovable property.

26 April - Actualiteitscollege Leergang Pensioenrecht 2016-2017

Actualiteitscollege Leergang Pensioenrecht georganiseerd door de Faculteit Rechtsgeleerdheid van de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.

Het college heeft als thema “De uittreding”. De uittreding is één van de belangrijkste begrippen uit de Wet op de Aanvullende Pensioenen (WAP). Bij heel wat recente dossiers zoals informatieverplichtingen, pensionering en rendementsgarantie kwam de notie ter sprake. Tijdens het college wordt de notie van naderbij toegelicht in het licht van de recente dossiers.

25-26 April – Symposium: Spoken Language in the Mines: Euregion and beyond

The colloquium has the aim to study the social practices and structural features of mining languages in a comparative perspective. Mining languages have a unique social ecology. Factors involved are rapid expansion and migration, the multi-ethnic composition of the workforce, binding to a locality, gender and male bounding, concerns for danger and safety, special technology, job specialization, and life underground as distinct from above ground. Generally, the language underground is not that of the owners of the mines but a lingua franca spoken by a chunk of the workforce. Also, there is always special vocabulary and new words being formed.

Existing work on the socio-cultural effects of globalization has typically focused on the huge contemporary metropolises with their explosive and conspicuous diversities (Wang, Cornips et al. 2014; 26). The mining areas go hand-in-hand with a huge diversity in linguistic resources but, nevertheless, are located in peripheral non-metropolitan areas, and often in border regions such as the Dutch, Belgian and German and borderland. These peripheral areas have remained understudied.

The focus was be on three continents: Europe (the former Oostelijke Mijnstreek, Belgian Limburg and the Ruhr area), Africa and South America.

11-12 April – Two day seminar 'Platform Lectoren Zorg en Welzijn’

Two day seminar 'Platform Lectoren Zorg en Welzijn’ with the topic 'Developments in the social domain - the role of knowledge an research centres'

Het seminar was vooral bedoeld om een inhoudelijke gedachtewisseling tot stand te brengen tussen lectoren en kenniskringleden over de ontwikkelingen in de verzorgingsstaat. De uitwisseling van kennis en ervaring werd tot stand gebracht in thematisch samengestelde gesprekstafels. Tevens werd er aandacht besteed aan de ontwikkeling van het sociale werk in buurlanden.

9 April – Parkstad Limburg & Städteregion Aachen: een euregionale tweelingstad?

Meeting organised by the Deutsch Niederländische Gesellschaft zu Aachen (DNG Aachen)

Naar aanleiding van de musical ‘De Tweeling’ van Tessa de Loo in Parkstad Limburg Theaters te Heerlen organiseerde het Deutsch Niederländische Gesellschaft zu Aachen (DNG) een lezing en een discussie. De Tweeling was de eerste Nederlandse roman (1993), die de Nederlands-Duitse verhoudingen tot thema had. Nog nooit is de verhouding tussen Nederland en Duitsland zo goed geweest. Er zijn echter grenzen. Volgens Loesje is ’een grens eigenlijk een wens om verder te gaan’. Creatief en slim met de grens omgaan, dat is de kunst.

Following the Dutch EU presidency in the first half of 2016, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment organised a meeting for EU member states in Amsterdam.

31 March - Conference 'Horst aan de Maas en Big Data'

March 2016

Conferentie over kennisdeling en toekomstperspectieven met betrekking tot Horst aan de Maas. De conferentie werd gehouden in een interactieve setting met presentaties, discussieronden en na afloop een borrel.

Vragen die aan bod kwamen:

Wat bindt en verdeelt de burgers in Horst aan de Maas?

Wat zijn de specifieke problemen, uitdagingen en oplossingsrichtingen in Horst aan de Maas?

Hoe bruikbaar zijn Big Data voor het verkennen en oplossen van de problematiek in Horst aan de Maas, en andere (Limburgse) gemeenten?

En hoe kan (wetenschappelijk) onderzoek oplossingsrichtingen aandragen?

17 March - 'Politiek Atelier' HNP, Brussels

In het kader van het Nederlands voorzitterschap van de Europese Raad organiseerde het Huis van de Nederlandse Provincies een politiek atelier getiteld ‘Samenwerken over grenzen heen’. Aanwezigheid op uitnodiging.

16 March – French institute MOT visits ITEM

The French institute that is involved with border issues in France and its border regions, Mission Opérationelle Transfrontalière / MOT, paid a visit to ITEM on 16 March. The objective of the visit, where CBS joined as well, is a further enhancement of the substantive cooperation in the area of the cross border impact assessment, the 'Politiek Atelier', the Luxembourg rapport and the possible jointly submission of EU subsidy requests.

4-5 March - DNG seminar - "Democratisation of the border - new ideas about euregional cooperation"

Het doel van het seminar van de Deutsch Niederländische Gesellschaft zu Aachen is het generen van innovatieve ideeën over:
 

  • het versterken van het euregionaal burgerschap c.q. euregionale identiteit;
  • het versterken van de sociaal-economische positie van de perifeer gelegen grensregio’s;
  • het vergroten van de sociale cohesie tussen de grensregio’s door een intensievere sociale, culturele en economische samenwerking;
  • de vorming van een grensparlement tussen Limburg en Nordrhein Westfalen?

MCT / ITEM Pension Seminar - ‘Kortwerkenrisico’ - In de wereld van Flexicurity, Gezondheid en Pensioen (Maastricht University)

De levensverwachting is in de afgelopen jaren gestegen en heeft geresulteerd in het verhogen van de pensioenleeftijd. Inherent daaraan is de verantwoorde afdekking van het daarmee gemoeide langlevenrisico. De vraag die dan opkomt is wat weten we over de vitaliteit van ouderen en met welke instrumenten kunnen we de terugval in inkomen opvangen?

In hoeverre kan rekening gehouden worden met een mogelijk toekomstig vitaliteitsverlies? Met andere woorden hoe kun je met dit kortwerkenrisico rekening houden, hoe kun je dit beheersen en aanpakken. Biedt de´Flexicurity´, dat gekenmerkt wordt door een flexibel ontslagrecht maar ook een pro-actief banenmarkt beleid, hiervoor oplossingen? Of moeten de ontstane inkomenstekorten opgevangen worden door het inzetten van pensioeninstrumenten? In hoeverre kan of moet de fiscaliteit hierin dan een rol spelen? En welke effecten uit de gezondheidskant dienen dan niet uit het oog verloren te worden.

Tijdens het 5e pensioenseminar werd de complexiteit van het ‘kortwerkenrisico’ centraal geplaatst.

5 November - Conference CBS (with ITEM members) – ‘Binding en Geluk’

On Thursday, 5th November, the conference ‘Binding en Geluk’ took place at the CBS in Heerlen. This gathering was on social connection and welfare in the Netherlands, at a national, regional and international level. The most important goal was to share knowledge in a professional, inspiring and interactive setting. Also the use of big data was discussed.

19 October - Workshop Cross-border Diploma Recognition

In cooperation with the German Ministry of labour, integration and social affairs NRW a very successful ITEM meeting took place on Monday 19th october on the subject of recognition of professional qualifications on the Dutch German labour market in the area of education and care.
