How does it affect the regulatory-space provisions in the WTO?

On September 20th at 12:30-13:30, Ms. Kristy will present the findings of her PhD research on the evolution of sustainable development in international law and how it affects WTO provisions. Feel warmly invited to join the discussion in room B1.019 in the Faculty of Law.

The presentation offers an insight how the evolution of sustainable development in international law affects the interpretation of WTO provisions. This research concluded the seven components of sustainable development by referring to the term ‘sustainable development’ in most international agreements in trade, investment and environment. This conclusion shows the evolution of how sustainable development is defined in international law.

The research further observes how the evolution of sustainable development affects the interpretation of WTO Agreements. Given the importance of standards and subsidies to achieve sustainable development, this research gives a particular look at WTO Agreements related to standards and subsidies. The seven components of sustainable development help identify the expression of sustainable development and potential provisions to better incorporate sustainable development in the WTO. Besides, these seven components could be used to incorporate sustainable development in the current WTO negotiations such as the one on fishery subsidies.
