UM team among world's best 4 WTO Moot Court teams
Maastricht University has successfully participated in the prestigious international moot court competition on WTO law. Having won the European Round in March, the four-member UM team went on to face the world's top 25 teams and reached the semi-finals.
Held from 19 to 23 June 2018 in Geneva, the moot court competition's International Round involved 98 other teams from all over the world. The UM team was made up of Master students Elli Zachari, Florence Berten, Caroline Hammacher and Gerardo Navarro, and coached by Iveta Alexovicova and Denise Prevost.
After an excellent performance in the preliminary and the quarter finals, the team qualified for the semi-final round of this competition between the 4 best teams in the world. There, our team was unfortunately defeated by the eventual winner of the entire competition, the team of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva.
The excellent achievement of our team was further strengthened by winning the prizes for the best written submission for the complainant and the best written submissions overall in the International Round. These prizes complement the team’s earlier prizes, won in the European Regional round of the competition, for best written submissions for the complainant, respondent and overall, and for best orator in the preliminary and semi-final rounds, awarded to Elli Zachari.
The success of this year’s team confirms our university’s excellent reputation in this high-level competition and thereby in the field of international trade law. The valuable contribution of colleagues who participated in the rehearsals is greatly appreciated, as is the financial support of the Faculty.
