Thomas Cleij appointed as new Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering

The Executive Board of Maastricht University (UM) has appointed Prof. dr. Thomas Cleij as the new dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering. As acting dean, Thomas Cleij has managed the transition of the former Faculty of Humanities and Sciences to a science, technology, engineering & mathematics (STEM) faculty last year. Before that, he was involved in the development of the Maastricht Science Programme.

In recent years, UM has founded new academic programmes (including the Maastricht Science Programme and the master’s programmes Systems Biology Master and Biobased Materials) as well as new institutes (including AMIBM, MaCSBio and IDS@UM). In line with UM’s strategic agenda and the Regional Knowledge Agenda (which includes the Brightlands campuses), Cleij will intensify and accelerate the development of UM’s science profile.

The standard appointment period for a dean at UM is four years. Considering FSE’s current transition period, the term will be extended to five years. Any potential re-appointment would then be for a period of three years.
