European Cartoon Award 2024

Navalny

The first prize was awarded to Belgian cartoonist Steven 'Lectrr' Degryse for his work in the Belgian newspaper De Standaard. Steven 'Lectrr' Degryse's cartoon comments on the death of Russian politician and activist Alexei Navalny.

The shared second prize went to Tjeerd Royaards (Netherlands) and Victor Solís (Mexico). Honorable mentions went to Elena Ospina (Colombia) and Peter Kuper (United States).

Emanuele Del Rosso, ECA Deputy Director:

“This year's winning cartoon is about freedom of expression. It is embodied by Alexei Navalny. His corpse on a mortuary table with his mouth sewn shut represents the end of free speech in Russian society. It is an apt metaphor that applies to several countries.
