POLITICO partners with Studio Europa Maastricht to host 2024 Maastricht Debate

Ahead of the European Parliamentary Elections, POLITICO and Studio Europa Maastricht (SEM) have partnered to co-organise the third Maastricht Debate on Monday April 29, 2024.

In what is expected to be one of the most consequential elections taking place in 2024, the Maastricht Debate will focus on the concerns and issues of younger voters, with Europe’s top candidates taking to the stage to discuss and field their questions.

Following a successful media partnership in 2019, POLITICO and SEM are expanding their collaboration further, starting today with the launch of a dedicated website to register and engage with the debate. The website will allow participants to help shape the discussion, submit questions for the candidates and register to attend on-site.

The Maastricht Debate is an initiative of Maastricht University and is supported by the Province of Limburg, the City of Maastricht and the European Parliament. It will take place in the Theater aan het Vrijthof, located in the city where the European Union was founded with the signing of the Maastricht Treaty in 1992.

Five party groups have already committed in principle to participate in the debate, which will feature joint moderation provided by POLITICO and SEM. Content from the Maastricht Debate will be available for broadcasters and external audiences to utilise further, such as viewing guides for watch parties.

Speaking on the announcement, Jamil Anderlini, Editor-in-Chief for POLITICO in Europe, said: “2024 will feature some of the most momentous elections for a generation, so we are delighted to partner with Studio Europa Maastricht for this opportunity to engage with European voters, including younger voters, and the topics that matter most to them. POLITICO prides itself on its high-impact, high-quality journalism, and I am confident the Maastricht Debate will be an excellent contribution to that body of work.”

Prof Dr Rianne Letschert, President of Maastricht University commented: “We are delighted to announce our partnership with POLITICO for the third edition of the Maastricht Debate. With this substantive and critical debate, we aim to inform young people throughout Europe about the upcoming European elections and urge them to cast their votes. As a European University, our connection to the EU has endured since the signing of the Maastricht Treaty. We therefore take great pride in facilitating this dialogue on the future of Europe, during a defining moment for European democracy.”

Notes to editors:
The parties which have agreed in principle to participate in the debate include European Free Alliance (EFA), Party of the European Left (EL), Greens, Party of European Socialists (PES) and the Renew Europe Group.
