Migration Expert Melissa Siegel sheds light on the Ukrainian refugee crisis
Melissa Siegel is Head of Migration Studies and Head of the Migration and Development research section at UNU-MERIT & Maastricht University School of Business and Economics. She manages several migration research projects and educational programmes. Currently, Melissa's work lies in the causes and consequences of migration.
"We are currently seeing unprecedented displacement from Ukraine. In just over a month, a quarter of the country is displaced due to conflict."
Melissa consistently uploads videos to YouTube related to her expertise to bridge the gap between academia and society. In her latest YouTube series she discussed the displacement of the Ukrainian population as a result of the war in Ukraine. As of the release of her video, a quarter of the Ukrainian population has had to flee their homes. 6.5 million people to another region within Ukraine and more than 4 million people to a neighbouring country. Melissa also sheds light on the European Union's response to this mass European migration. Specifically on the measures taken to support the refugees in the present and the future.
