Keuzegids 2017: 'Top quality programme' seal for two UM bachelor's programmes

Rectification: on 23 November 2016, Keuzegids Universiteiten published a new ranking based on additional data. With a total of 98 points University College Maastricht (UCM) rised to first position, which is head and shoulders above other University Colleges. See this news release.

In the latest edition of the Dutch study information guide Keuzegids Universiteiten, five out of the seventeen UM bachelor's programmes that were evaluated were ranked first. The university itself was listed fourth in the 'other universities' category. University College Maastricht (UCM) and Knowledge Engineering received a 'quality seal'. This means that the programmes are amongst the best interdisciplinary academic education programmes in the Netherlands.

The 'quality seal' predicate is reserved for programmes that obtain a cumulative score of 76 or higher (as well as an assessment of '++' or higher). UCM scored 88 points (+++) and Knowledge Engineering 82 (++). According to the Keuzegids, Knowledge Engineering was 'head and shoulders above the competition'. UCM belongs to a small group of twenty Dutch bachelor's programmes that have made the top-quality education list for five consecutive years, but was unable to retain its first place due to fierce competition.

Thirteen UM programmes obtained a top 3 listing in the Keuzegids, five of these programmes made first place. Medicine gained a new top 3 position (from 5th place last year), which marks the only difference compared to twelve top 3 programmes last year. Overall, three UM programmes were ranked higher than last year and five were ranked lower.

The five UM programmes that rank first are European Public Health (70), European Studies (56), Tax Law (62), Knowledge Engineering (82) and the Maastricht Science Programme (68). The eight bachelor's programmes that obtained a top 3 listing are University College Maastricht (2nd, with a score of 88), Econometrics (3rd, 64), European Law School (2nd, 58), Fiscal Economics (2nd, 60), International Business (2nd, 68), Psychology (2nd, 66), Health Sciences (3rd, 54) and Medicine (3rd, 68).

Most UM programmes score high in the areas of Skills, Content and Facilities. The assessment of the university's information provision was less positive; a familiar issue at the university. The recent launch of the student portal - which allows students to consult personalised study information at any moment from any device - is the first step towards improving the university's (online) information provision.

About the Keuzegids
The Keuzegids is annually compiled by an independent editorial board at the Dutch Centre for Higher Education Information. It aims to help students select a programme of study. The 2017 rankings were compiled based on an assessment by students and experts on the bachelor's programmes, the professors, the facilities and more.
