Cross-border cooperation in coalition agreement Maastricht

The newly drafted coalition agreement of the Municipality of Maastricht demonstrates the importance of Maastricht’s international position and cooperation, the ITEM Expertise Centre concludes. In the official document, which was signed on June 11th 2018, several ambitions on (Euro)regional level are formulated for the upcoming administrative period. The objectives are involved with cross-border cooperation, labour mobility, education and transportation.

This month, the Municipality of Maastricht presented their coalition agreement, titled ‘Maastricht: Unlimited and Unstrained’, as a result of negotiations among the elected representatives.

In its new coalition agreement, which was signed on June 11th, 2018, the Municipality of Maastricht formulates its ambitions for the year 2030, and the approach to achieve those ambitions during the upcoming administrative period from 2018-2022.

The importance of Maastricht’s international position and cross-border cooperation received special attention in the coalition agreement, the Institute for Transnational and Euregional cross border cooperation and Mobility / ITEM concludes. In the official document drafted by the municipal representatives, it is made clear that the newly appointed representatives value the city’s position in the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion. Among its objectives for 2018-2022 is a strong collaboration with partners in the Euroregion. To stimulate the knowledge economy and labour market the municipality will work together to reduce border effects and administrative barriers i.e. by joint lobbying throughout the Euroregion, with the national government and Brussels, therefore aspiring to make cross-border working easier and intensifying job placement across the border.

Within the theme of 'knowledge economy and labour market', the municipality favours an expansion of the Maastricht International Centre: a location that brings together expertise and provision of services in cross-border contexts, with the Holland Expat Center South, Cross-Border Information Point, the Service for Cross-border Job Placement and the ITEM Expertise Centre as the main instigators.

Other areas of interest include stimulation of the labour market with strong focus on retaining and attracting talent, boosting opportunities for students (i.e. cross-border internships or exchanges), improvement of the cross-border transportation in the Meuse-Rhine Euregion and strengthening the identity of Maastricht as an ‘international university city of European stature‘.

Starting June 18th 2018, the party members of CDA - Seniorenpartij Maastricht - GroenLinks - D66 - VVD - SP form the Municipal Executive.
