Read our latest interview with Stella Shukla, SBE-alumna and now Managing Consultant in Digital Transformation, who shares how a mix of strategic thinking and hands-on experience has defined her path from student to consultant.

Stella’s roles at Atos and KPMG laid a foundation in consulting, which she built on through transformative projects at Horváth, where she now navigates cutting-edge topics like Generative AI and Agile Transformations.

Her advice for aspiring consultants focuses on gaining practical experience and keeping up with digital trends.

Transforming organisations in the Digital Age

Can you describe your role as a consultant at Horváth and the types of projects you typically work on?

I work as a Managing Consultant at Horvath in the Digital Transformation & IT team, where I primarily engage with companies at a strategic level from a CIO or CFO perspective. I have gained project experience across various areas, including IT Strategy, Agile Transformations, IT Sourcing, and Generative AI.

What excites you most about working on Digital Transformation projects, and what impact do you hope to have on your clients?

I enjoy the innovative nature of digital transformation projects. While many assume these changes are confined to the IT department, they now have a significant impact across the entire organization. My goal is to create real value for my clients by delivering services that enhance their current business practices or support them in their transformation journey.

In your opinion, what are the most significant challenges companies face when undergoing digital transformation?

Companies face many challenges in digital transformation, but two stand out. First, there’s often cultural resistance to change, as employees can be hesitant to adopt new technologies or processes. Second, especially with investments in (Generative) AI, companies frequently encounter uncertainty about the return on investment.

What skills do you believe are essential for success in consulting within your area of expertise?

As a consultant, having a curious and open mindset is essential for quickly learning new concepts. It's important to be adaptable to different environments since each client presents unique challenges. Additionally, strategic thinking and strong problem-solving skills are crucial. In the context of digital transformation, technical literacy, along with a solid understanding of IT and information management, is highly advantageous.

Key lessons and insights

What motivated you to pursue both your Bachelor's and Master's degrees in International Business at Maastricht University?

Maastricht University offered me the ideal opportunity to study in an international environment close to home. The problem-based learning approach and small tutorial groups created an intense and personal learning experience. Moreover, the School of Business and Economics is a prestigious institution with a diverse curriculum that prepares students exceptionally well for the business world.

How did your internship at KPMG and your student consulting experience at Atos build your understanding of the consulting industry?

I highly recommend internships in your field of interest. They allow you to gain a true understanding of the work environment, daily tasks, and working style, helping you see if it aligns with your own values. Beyond this, internships offer valuable practical experience and on-the-job learning. As it was my first professional experience, I was able to learn from my mistakes and expand my knowledge. Consulting internships, in particular, provide a foundational skillset and offer a valuable opportunity to assess if this is the right career path for you.

What advice would you give to students who aspire to work in consulting?

Seek hands-on experience early through internships, working student positions, or participation in student consulting projects. Additionally, staying informed about current trends in the field of digital transformation and hot topics is beneficial. Reviewing job descriptions from companies of interest will provide insight into the required skill sets. Lastly, focusing on your studies and achieving good grades will give you the academic foundation needed for success.

Looking back on your journey from student to consultant, what are you most proud of?

Believing in myself and never giving up. As Maastricht University emphasizes, going the extra mile is always worthwhile because we grow through our experiences. I am proud of my continued motivation and curiosity to achieve my goals.
