Advancing circular transitions: Prof. Dr. Nancy Bocken’s contribution to research and executive education
Prof. Dr. Nancy Bocken has recently reached a significant academic milestone with more than 50,000 citations on Google Scholar. This recognition underscores the influence of her research on sustainable business models and circular business transitions. In addition, she has consistently been included in the Stanford University list of the world’s Top 2% most influential scientists since the ranking was first published in 2020.
Alongside her research contributions, Prof. Dr. Bocken is actively engaged in translating academic knowledge into practice through education. One of her key initiatives is the Circular Economy Masterclass at UMIO, a three-day program designed for professionals and organisations. UMIO is the executive branch of Maastricht University School of Business and Economics (SBE).
Why now?
As Prof. Dr. Bocken explains, “To reach our climate goals and reduce pressure on natural resources we need a new way of thinking. The EU, like many other countries and regions, has recognised the Circular Economy as a driver for sustainable growth, job creation, and resolving environmental issues. That’s why it’s of utmost importance for professionals to deep-dive into the Circular Economy.”
Integration of research and teaching
The course incorporates insights from Prof. Dr. Bocken’s research, particularly on circular business models. Many of these findings stem from the Circular X research project, which is supported by a European Research Council grant. Participants are introduced to tools and methods that can be applied in practice, as well as case studies illustrating circular innovations.
Learning by doing
The masterclass emphasises the practical application of circular principles. Tools and approaches presented in the program have been tested with businesses and organisations. Prof. Dr. Bocken and her colleagues draw on their experience working for companies such as DHL, ING, and Accenture, as well as on entrepreneurial initiatives such as HOMIE, a circular business she co-founded. This practical lens ensures that participants do not just learn about circularity, but are empowered to take immediate action in their own work environments.

Beyond tools and frameworks, the masterclass emphasizes collaboration and leadership. “Circular economy requires thinking beyond ‘linear value chains’ towards new circular business ecosystems,” Prof. Dr. Bocken notes. Personal leadership is treated as a critical element for initiating change, with the aim of enabling participants across all business functions to contribute to the transition.
Equipped for the future
After completion, participants are expected to return to their organizations equipped with practical tools and inspiration to initiate their own circular economy experiments. The course promotes an experimental mindset, encouraging professionals to begin, adapt, and learn from practice rather than waiting for ideal conditions.
