Dr Madhura Rao (M.)
Madhura Rao is an Assistant Professor in Food Systems Governance for Planetary Health. Her research investigates how the food system can be transformed to support both human and planetary health, with a particular focus on safety, equity, and sustainability. She is especially interested in how policy, science, and society interact to shape food systems, and how inclusive governance approaches can enable transitions towards more just and resilient futures. Her work is interdisciplinary in nature and often involves collaboration with researchers from diverse disciplines and stakeholders from across the food chain.
Madhura is a qualified university teacher and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses focusing on food, sustainability, and qualitative research methods.

Career history
In 2018, Madhura completed an MSc in food safety, specialising in supply chain operations and food law from Wageningen University. From 2019 to 2023, she was a PhD candidate at Maastricht University’s Food Claims Centre Venlo where she investigated food waste valorisation opportunities in the context of EU law and policy. From 2023 until March 2025, she was a postdoctoral fellow at the Athena Institute of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. There, she conducted research within the framework of various EU-funded projects such as CLEVERFOOD and FUSILLI.
