J.T. Gunawan
Johanna Gunawan is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Law, affiliated with the Law and Tech Lab at Maastricht University's Faculty of Law.
Johanna's research unites computer science with law and policy, focusing on the intersection of human-computer interaction, design, and consumer protections. Most recently, her research investigates dark patterns' (interface designs interfering with user autonomy towards undesired outcomes) deployment and regulation, privacy and surveillance, and digital asymmetries.
Her work has been published in top venues across disciplines, including the Washington University Law Review, Seton Hall Law Review, CHI, CSCW, and CSLAW. This work has also been cited by the OECD, U.K. Competition and Markets Authority, and U.S. Federal Trade Commission. Johanna's research is additionally informed by extensive industry experience in cybersecurity, UX, privacy, and compliance, spanning positions at Akamai Technologies, Rapid7 LLC, Vimeo Inc., and Common Sense Media.
Previously, Johanna received her B.A. in Political Science and International Affairs (minoring in Japanese and East Asian Studies) at Northeastern University's College of Social Sciences and Humanities, then her M.S. in Cybersecurity as an ALIGN Scholar at the Khoury College of Computer Sciences. She was a Visiting Ph.D. Researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Security and Privacy in 2023. In 2024, she received her Ph.D. in Cybersecurity at the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University, working under Professors David Choffnes, Christo Wilson, and Woodrow Hartzog.
