Career history

Johannes Keiler is a tenured Assistant Professor at the criminal law department and the Maastricht Institute for Criminal Sciences (MICS). He specializes in comparative and European substantive criminal law. His current work focuses on sexual offences and gender based violence.

In 2013 he defended his dissertation on "Actus reus and participation in European criminal law" in which he combined insights from comparative and European criminal law. For his innovative work he received the Moddermanprice 2014 for the best criminal law dissertation in the Netherlands.

Subsequently, Dr. Keiler has worked on a variety of topics, including cooperation in criminal matters, confiscation and human smuggling. Furthermore, he has conducted research in international projects such as CrossBes, a tri-national research project funded by the European Union which investigated the cross border execution of sentences. Together with Prof. Dr. David Roef, he is also the co-author and co-editor of the handbook Comparative Concepts of Criminal Law (Intersentia, 3rd revised edition, 2019, ISBN 978-1-78068-685-1)).

He currently coordinates and lectures in subjects including comparative criminal law and Dutch substantive criminal law.
