“Growing up, I used to read comic books about the X-Men. The X-Men represent a superhero team that fights for justice. Despite the heroic acts, some people see these heroes as misfits and want to remove their superhuman abilities by changing their DNA. Nowadays, genome editing makes it possible to change human DNA so that certain characteristics will no longer pass on to children. I realized that this is a complicated and sensitive topic. Indeed, I discovered that this issue demands an inter-disciplinary discussion. An important question is: what does genome editing have to do with law? Law can play a prominent role, as legislation can prohibit genetic applications or allow them (under conditions). Therefore, my thesis provides a legal philosophical approach to genome editing under Dutch law..”
