Internships at Maastricht University
Did you find an internship at one of the departments of Maastricht University, and do you have a different nationality than Dutch? The International Staff Support Office (ISSO) is there to help apply for the correct permits so you can start your internship on time.
Please read the information below carefully to see what applies to your situation.
Non-EU Interns
If you are a non-EU national, a residence permit and/or work permit is required to do an internship in the Netherlands. Maastricht University will assist in applying for the necessary permits. The application procedures for a residence permit and work permit can take a long time. For example, a combined residence and work permit can take up to 3 months. So, it is important that you and your supervisor at the UM notify ISSO and the People & Development department (HR) on time. If we do not apply for and receive the approval of the permits before the start of your internship, we cannot guarantee that you can start your internship on time.
If you are already studying in the Netherlands with a valid residence permit for study purposes, no additional work permit is needed for internships that are part of your study program. At ISSO we will check if you can make use of the exemption.
EU interns
As an EU/EEA or Swiss national, no residence or work permit is required for internships in the Netherlands. You are free to do your internship. If you are not studying in the Netherlands, we recommend that you check and apply for a European Health Insurance Card if you haven’t yet, to ensure emergency medical coverage.
