Internships at Maastricht University
If you have secured an internship at one of Maastricht University’s departments and you do not hold Dutch nationality, the International Staff Support Office (ISSO) can assist you in arranging the correct work and or residence permits so you can begin your internship on time.
Please review the information below to understand what applies to your situation.
Non-EU interns
If you are a non-EU/EEA or non-Swiss national, you will generally require a residence permit and/or a work permit to undertake an internship in the Netherlands. Maastricht University will help you apply for the necessary permits.
These applications can take time, a combined residence and work permit may take up to 3 months to process. Therefore, it is essential that both you and your UM supervisor inform ISSO and the People & Development (HR) department as early as possible. If permits are not approved before the internship start date, we cannot guarantee you will be able to begin on time.
Did you know that with an Erasmus+ internship agreement, you don't need a work permit for your internship? The same applies if you're already studying in the Netherlands with a valid residence permit for study purposes. In that case, no additional work permit is required for internships that are part of your study programme. ISSO will confirm whether you are eligible for this exemption.
EU interns
If you are an EU/EEA or Swiss national, you do not need a residence or work permit to do an internship in the Netherlands. You are free to start your internship without these formalities.
If you are not studying in the Netherlands, we recommend applying for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) before you arrive. This will ensure you have emergency medical coverage during your stay.
