Exercising at UM SPORTS for SenUM members

As a member of SenUM you can (continue to) exercise at a reduced rate at UM SPORTS, the sports department of Maastricht University (UM). Below you will find more information about the sports on offer (for seniors) and how to become a member of UM SPORTS.

Sports activities

UM SPORT offers a wide range of sports, from badminton to yoga and from cycling to squash. Basically, you can join all activities or exercise independently in the gym. Special senior workouts are also regularly held there under the guidance of an instructor. You can find the complete sports programme online at MyUSC.

Senior Gym Workout

The Senior Gym Workouts (only for UM SPORTS members) take place on Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 09:30 to 10:15. Under the guidance of a sports instructor, you do exercises with materials and equipment in the gym. Before or after the workout, the participants usually drink coffee together in the UM Sports Café, but this is of course not an obligation.

Would you like to join this workout? Then you need to sign up. You can do this at the UM SPORTS reception, by sending an e-mail to umsports@maastrichtuniversity.nl or by registering online via MyUSC. Please note that you must be a UM SPORTS member to join these activities.

Senior group classes

From 4 September 2023 onwards, UM SPORTS will have an expanded offer of senior activities. From Monday to Friday, two activities will then take place daily between 09:00 and 12:00. Some examples of these activities are:

  • Relaxation for seniors
  • Tai Chi
  • Walking outside
  • Guided fitness
  • Senior Spinning (indoor cycling)

The timetable changes from time to time. The current class schedule can always be found in MyUSC.

Membership types

UM SPORTS has different types of memberships, depending on the type of sport you want to do. For aerobic group classes or ball and racket sports, for example, you need a "Sports" membership. If you only want to work out independently and/or join the Senior Gym Workout, you need a "Gym" membership.

Rates SenUM members

UM SPORTS applies different rates for different types of members and distinguishes between 4 categories. For example, UM students (category 1) and UM employees (category 2) pay less than external members with no relation to UM (category 4). SenUM members are eligible for a reduced rate and fall into 'category 3'.

Furthermore, you can choose a monthly, semester or annual membership. Please note that UM SPORTS's opening hours and memberships are related to an academic year. For example, a semester membership is valid until 31 January and a year membership until 31 August. For example, if you take out an 'annual membership' in April, you will in fact only become a member for a few months (until 31 August).

How can I become a member?

To qualify for the reduced category 3 rate and thus become a member of UM SPORTS, you need to take the following steps:

  1. Ask the secretary of SenUM (marypeters@senum.nl) for a written confirmation of your SenUM membership.
  2. Take this confirmation with you to the desk of the University Sports Centre (P. Debyeplein 15, 6229 HA Maastricht).
  3. At the counter, conclude the desired membership. Please note that you have to pay the full price of the membership directly.
