Prof. Dr. Cees Flinterman
In November 2019, Cees Flinterman will turn 75. During his very active academic and professional life dedicated to the development of International Law and specifically to the protection of Human Rights in the framework of the UN Treaty bodies, Cees has worked together with numerous colleagues all around the globe. His work in this international context has been praised at several occasions.
Cees Flinterman has, however, also been one of the founding fathers of the law faculty in Maastricht. He has been very actively involved in the setting up of the new curriculum, the implementation of the problem based teaching philosophy and the strong position of international law and human rights in the curriculum of legal education in Maastricht from the very beginning. Furthermore, he served as Dean of this very young faculty in the period between 1984 -1986.
During his Maastricht period he encouraged many young students in their interest for international law and human rights during his lectures and tutorials, but he also supervised successfully many PhDs; he is actually still doing this until today with great enthusiasm. To celebrate now his special anniversary, (former) Maastricht colleagues and PhD students of Cees, want to offer him a special symposium during which they want to look back together with Cees on their own academic experiences and personal relationship. Some of them are still very active in academic life, some are still closely connected to the subjects of their original research. Others have chosen a different professional path. During this symposium, these developments and experiences will be shared and discussed. Common – one can state - to all of them is their interest and engagement in human rights and the rule of law, global justice and the international legal order.
