"The Petro-Atom: A century of ubiquitous oil involvement in nuclear energy, 1895-1993"
Nuclear energy and oil are inseparably linked. From the very beginning, oil companies, technologies, scientists, and engineers have been involved in the development of atomic energy on an industrial scale. This involvement was there during the production of nuclear weapons in the Manhattan Project during the Second World War, in the various uranium mining projects in the United States, Europe and the Global South, and in current day discussions about a new transition to nuclear energy. This dissertation shows that energy transitions can only be understood from a combined perspective of multiple energy sources and the companies that exploit these energy sources such as Exxon, Shell and TotalEnergies. This perspective teaches us that the development of a new energy source occurred mainly due to the influence of already developed industries, but also depended on the backgrounds of the oil executives who devised and implemented the diversification strategies.
