IPKM Expert lecture "Open Design and Intellectual Property"

Open Design is a phenomenon which applies the concept of open source software to digital blueprints of physical objects. It relies heavily on the modular Creative Commons licensing regime, which requires a functioning copyright framework. Furthermore, the relation between Open Design and industrial property rights shall be discussed.

- Bio: Thomas Kirchberger studied law at the Johannes Kepler University, Linz (Austria), with international law and European law as the major fields of study. After finishing his studies and completing his internship at both the District and Regional Court Linz, he started working as a research assistant at the Institute of Public International Law, Air Law and International Relations, where he spends most of his time doing research, teaching and examination of students in European Union Law, Public International Law and Intellectual Property Law. He is about to finish his doctoral degree, where he focuses on European Intellectual Property Law, as he did in his diploma thesis. His PhD thesis deals with "Open Design and Intellectual Property" and takes a close look at this open source phenomenon, which relies on the functioning of the Creative Commons licensing system. During his PhD studies he had the opportunity of attending various international summer schools and seminars and gained additional practical experience teaching abroad via the ERASMUS+ programme.
