Biomedical Big Data As a Game Changer?

In the era of Big Data, not least in the field of healthcare, intellectual property outcomes are primarily based on the aggregation of personal data from mass populations - whether they aware of such actions or not.

Based on sophisticated algorithms analysis, the use of big data predicts a wide range of clinical and behavioral aspects in the field of healthcare and can subsequently used to develop new temperaments of new uses of existing therapies. Today, such algorithms are the subject matter of different forms intellectual property rights, including patent rights. However, without using patients personal data, the innovations and products that are based on these algorithms, couldn’t be created in the first place.

Hence, it is possible that under certain circumstances, big date health innovations are not entitled to traditional forms of intellectual property right, and that such innovation ought to be shared with other relevant stakeholders in the arena, including mass populations.

The lecture will look at some practical case studies in the field of health big data and will consider their relationship with regards to the above challenges.

The presentation will be provided by Adv. Daniel Berman, of the Maccabi Heath Fund in Israel, who is currently doing his PhD on this subject (Supervised by Prof. Kamperman Sanders and Prof. Pugatch)
