CPD Workshop: What is behind a test score? Using cognitive diagnostic modelling to better understand students’ needs.

In this workshop, participants will learn how to use cognitive diagnostic modelling to better understand students’ needs and apply CDM to their own educational activities, particularly in terms of formative assessment.

Test scores often drive learning in a negative, demotivating manner. Furthermore, students with similar scores might have a very different set of strengths and points that need further attention. Cognitive diagnostic modelling (CDM) is an emergent psychometric paradigm that aims to extract more information about students’ misconceptions and knowledge gaps from test results, helping teachers and students prioritize remediation efforts. In this workshop, participants will have the opportunity to understand this novel approach and learn how to apply CDM to their own educational activities, particularly in terms of formative assessment.

It is recommended that participants read the paper available here before or after the workshop (approximately 1 hour of reading time). It is also recommended that participants bring their own laptops so that they can run and interpret a CDM analysis for the first time, using two datasets that will be given during the workshop by the facilitator.

Participants interested in performing a CDM analysis with their own data will be able to schedule a meeting with the facilitator after the workshop and get additional assistance if so they wish.

About the trainer
Carlos Fernando Collares works as an assessment specialist for the European Board of Medical Assessors, as a volunteer for the WHO Academy Assessment Working Group and as a member of the supervisory board of the Sitchting Aphasia.help. From 2012 to 2022 he worked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Educational Development and Research at the School of Healthcare Professions Education (SHE), FHML, Maastricht University. His efforts are focused on the development of assessments with a higher degree of validity and reliability, such as the computerized adaptive progress test and the study of the psychometric impact of different formats for test items, such as very-short answer questions. More recently, he has explored the use of cognitive diagnostic modelling in the selection and assessment of students in higher education.
