Eline Schmeets, alumna BA Arts and Culture

I am really glad I decided to study Arts and Culture at Maastricht University. Through this programme I have not only learned a lot about the content of the different courses I took, but I have also acquired a number of valuable skills that are useful in a lot of other contexts as well.

This programme will teach you to think creatively and critically, to reason, and to ask the right questions. These skills will allow you to gain new insights into whatever you are interested in. The humanities have made me comfortable with uncertainty, doubt and scepticism. It is a discipline that is more concerned with asking the right questions than with finding the right answers. That is what I love about it. The humanities are subversive and do not really believe there is one right answer – they keep us from being limited by our own desire for certainty.
I am proud of my Humanities education, and I actually appreciate the fact that it did not train me to one specific job or field of work. I now work as a Policy Advisor (Education) for Maastricht University, but before this job I was the marketing manager for an IT company – it may very well be that 4 years from now I will be doing something completely different.
