Alejandra Murillo Sosa, MA Arts and Heritage

Alejandra is from Mexico and has a bachelor’s degree in Architecture from the university of Mexico-City.

“After my bachelor’s, I volunteered for six months in the European Art Museum in Mexico-City. I then started to work for an architect firm. After half a year, I got a call from the museum and I was hired as an assistant to the exhibit designer. When the exhibit designer left, I got promoted, even though I was only 24 at the time. I stayed for another four years, until I felt I had learned all I could. After another short interval at an architect firm I was hired as an exhibit designer by the National Museum for Arts in Mexico.

I started to research master’s programmes, because I felt I missed in-depth knowledge on how art and culture function, about management and policies and relationships between museums and society. Having travelled to the Netherlands many times, I was impressed by the quality of life and level of happiness here. I chose this 1-year programme because of the focus on policies and politics and the Problem-Based Learning system at Maastricht University. Since I had to do a pre-master’s before starting my master’s, I was already familiar with this education system.

My dream is to continue studying and apply for a PhD during which I want to conduct research in policies in arts and culture as a tool to be more inclusive. There is a lot of potential for arts institutions to be more inclusive. I would also like to teach in an environment like I’m experiencing now in Maastricht, and encourage people to be more open.”
