Mentor and portfolio programme

Throughout the programme you will be given ongoing feedback and guidance with respect to your learning process and progress through a mentor and portfolio programme which aims to help you to realise your fullest potential.

You will be divided into small groups comprising a mix of first, second and third year students who will work under the close guidance of a mentor. You will meet regularly with your mentor to discuss and evaluate your learning process and progress. The mentor will help and advise you on any difficulties that you may experience in your studies and will support your development during your time in the UMLC.

The focus in the UMLC is on competence development. Instead of assessing your performance in a traditional way by means of examinations, the UMLC is assessed on the basis of a portfolio which tracks your learning process and progress. The e-portfolio is built around ten competences:

Personal Development

  • Global Citizenship
  • Leadership
  • Collaboration

Communication

  • Interpersonal communication
  • Written communication
  • Public speaking

Academic development

  • Information literacy
  • Problem solving
  • Research methodology
  • Cognitive complexity

Each assignment in the UMLC programme focuses on a combination of these competences. Your progress in developing these competences is assessed in the e-portfolio by instructors, peers and yourself. Once you have received your assessments, you will be given the opportunity to discuss your performance with your mentor and to develop a plan for further growth.
