Suvi-Tuuli Puharinen (S.T.M.)
Suvi-Tuuli Puharinen is an assistant professor of European law, particularly EU environmental law. She holds a PhD in environmental law from University of Eastern Finland, where she defended her doctoral dissertation titled "Normative Environmental Quality as a Regulatory Strategy in EU Environmental Law : Legal Implications of Water Status Objectives" in summer 2024. The dissertation studies the regulatory solutions to protect waters and the marine environment in the EU water and marine environmental law, including the multidisciplinary background of the regulatory strategies and the legal functioning of the relevant environmental directives within the broader system of EU law. Suvi-Tuuli's research focuses on EU environmental law, particularly on topics related to water, marine environmental protection and biodiversity law. The leading theme in her research is understanding what kind of regulatory solutions are needed for enacting systemic changes to halt widescale environmental crises such as biodiversity loss and pollution, and to achieve effective protection of the natural environment. In addition, her research interests encompass environmental liability, sustainable corporate governance law, as well as more theoretical research on the role of law in sustainability transition and adaptive governance and law.
