- FSE_Computational systems biology versus human aging Targeting cellular aging and senescence through metabolic modeling.doc.pdf (771.42 KB, PDF)… Aging involves intertwined processes on cellular and tissue levels. In particular, cellular senescence, a heterogeneous phenotype of permanent growth arrest, is an important driver of aging in tissues. Interventions against aging, e.g. by targeting this senescent state, could extend the healthy lifespan and contribute to regenerative medicine. Cellular senescence has significant ties to metabolism, suggesting potential intervention strategies; however, these ties need to be characterized further. Hypothesis and Objectives: This project will study the metabolic changes accompanying cellular aging and in particular senescence with the goal of identifying possible new signatures and biomarkers, as well as possible metabolic targets for more selective and specific drugs …

There is something about the energetic pounding of the drums in this song that always manages to lift her spirits, and her smart home system knows it. Since K herself had not planned to wake up so early, she realizes, while still struggling to get out of bed, that this can only mean one thing: the level of hormones in her body had suddenly decreased overnight, alerting the system that her mood state was trying to take a turn towards depression. In the old days, such slight modifications of her blood values …

- marjan_peeters.pdf (301.61 KB, PDF)… The EU ETS and aviation emissions – Prof Dr Marjan Peeters, Maastricht University. Biography: Marjan Peeters is Professor of Environmental Policy and Law at Maastricht University. Her research focuses on how a high level of environmental protection can be effectively and efficiently reached based on the rule of law and in the context of sustainable development. Core research attention goes to legal aspects of climate change, regulatory instruments for emission reduction, and the way how law deals … the aviation emissions caused by staff and students. Aviation emissions caused by travelling across the EU are predominantly regulated by the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). Moreover, also Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein have joined this regulatory approach, and soon Switzerland will follow. Some Member States consider, or have introduced, additional regulatory approaches, such as taxes. Initially, the EU ETS was set up with a directive from 2003 to cap ànd reduce emissions from large industrial installations in a cost-effective way. The emissions from aviation were included with a directive from 2008 covering aviation emissions from 2012 onwards. However, this regulation of aviation emissions shows some remarkable differences compared to the regulation of emissions from industries, with, generally, a more favourable regulation of the aviation sector. Practice until now shows that industrial emissions …

Examples are Art.5(1) 1972 World Heritage Convention, Art.15 of the 2003 UNESCO Convention and Art.31 UNDRIP.3 Yet, neither national nor international law can be classified as a neutral, value-free sphere, as Babcock rightly points out. It is used as an instrument to shape society and realize societal goals. Heritage policies which are developed in line with international law on the national or regional … to pursue a specific goal or adopt a particular explanatory model limits the participatory practices which are left available. Focusing on the 1972 UNESCO World Heritage Convention and the UNDRIP and focusing on indigenous communities as participants, this paper explores the extent to which international human rights and cultural heritage law have articulated or indicated the goals to be pursued with participatory practices.
