- 04_CfP_MORSE2023_Track_Narratives.pdf (571.19 KB, PDF)… Societies, Economies and Enterprises 4th Annual Conference 2024 Track: Expectations and Narratives in Macroeconomics Maastricht, the Netherlands, 23-25 October 2024 Track Chairs: Julian Ashwin, Giulia Piccillo Description of the track The aim of this track is to bring together empirical and theoretical evidence on the role of expectations and narratives for the macroeconomy. The role of expectations and how they are formed is central to the study of macroeconomics, from the rational … learning (Evans & Honkapohja, 2001) and the many recent innovations surrounding heterogeneous and boundedly rational expectations. A growing literature also recognises the importance of narratives in economics, documenting how stories or concepts can spread between people and have substantial economic impacts (Shiller, 2017). Furthermore, methodological innovations in surveys and natural language processing have begun to allow narratives to be measured quantitatively (Flynn and Sastry, 2022; Andre et al 2023). By bringing together these two literatures, this track aims to further our understanding of how narratives evolve and how they influence economic agents’ expectations. This includes, but is not limited to, applications to narratives around resilience and the climate crisis. Examples of relevant …

- 2022fse_bonizzi_data-driven_and_adaptive_decomposition_of_multi-variate_signals.pdf (423.15 KB, PDF)… plays an important role in our understanding of a variety of complex systems in engineering, physics, biology, and medicine. A major challenge is to achieve a data-driven and adaptive decomposition of a multi-variate signal in a set of components that can accurately capture the nonlinear and nonstationary dynamics typical of complex systems. Current approaches have limitations in terms of their ability to properly separate the information in a multi-variate signal while minimizing leakage of information over several … starting from state-of-the-art univariate signal decomposition methods. Setting and Methods: Recently, we proposed singular spectrum decomposition, an adaptive and data driven method for the decomposition of univariate signals (Bonizzi et al., 2015). This method is based on standard matrix factorization techniques like singular value decomposition, and on the concept of trajectory matrix, which links to recurrence analysis of complex systems. Modification of these techniques, also by means of …

- fpn_csc_tom_smeets_1.pdf (281.5 KB, PDF)… University (NL) Proposal (250 words): Introduction: Strong emotional memories of traumatic, fearful experiences are characteristic of stress- and anxiety-related disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Reactivating emotional memories can induce a labile period during which these memories are sensitive to change before being reconsolidated (i.e., stored into long-term memory again). Research has shown that it is possible to induce amnesia for the emotional constituents of fear memories through reconsolidation interference strategies. This opens up new avenues for treating fear memories, yet there are several boundary conditions that limit its practical applicability. As exposure to acute stress is known to enhance the consolidation of emotional memories while impairing their … positive effects of reconsolidation interference on the emotional affective components of the fear memory; and (2) stress will impair the reactivation of fear memories and the subsequent usefulness of reconsolidation interference. Setting and Methods: This project utilizes standard stress protocols, as well as memory reactivation and reconsolidation interference strategies within a human fear conditioning paradigm. Impact: This project may lead to an improved reconsolidation-based treatment of the …
- fpn_csc_madelon_peters_1.pdf (281.33 KB, PDF)… In the last decades, evidence has accumulated that optimism protects against pain-related disability. Moreover, recent work suggests that positive emotions/cognitions might enhance short- and long- term exposure effects. Hypothesis and Objectives: This project aims to further unravel ‘if’, ‘when’ and ‘how’ optimism enhances extinction of pain-related fear. The key objectives are to systematically investigate: 1. causal effects of optimism on distinct extinction phases and 2. the role of … in the causal effect and underlying mechanism of optimism on fear extinction. The project will contribute to a novel/exciting research field. It might stimulate creating new avenues in the treatment of chronic pain based on optimism. Like private employees, civil servants will be bound by private employment and dismissal legislation. This means that in case of a dispute or dismissal, civil servants will no longer lodge an objection with their own employer with the possibility of appealing to the administrative court. Instead, they will lodge their objection with the (civil) … or a subdistrict court, a mechanism known as preventive protection against dismissal. Although the procedure around dismissal will change, employers will be required to have legally based grounds of dismissal; the same as under civil service law. Why this new Act? - mozambique_nutrition_project_summary_sheet_okp_moz_104338.docx (43.95 KB, DOCX)… involved (approx..) 10 Descriptive summary of the project (main goal(s), main activities, main results Why a new master’s programme in nutrition is needed In Mozambique, 43% of the children are chronically malnourished and suffer from stunted growth. This will seriously affect their future health and wellbeing, and it will limit their capacity to contribute to the further development of the country. In many cases, the cause is not primarily inadequate supply of food. A key factor causing inadequate nutrition resides on the consumer side of the value chain. People in the rural as well as the urban areas, lack awareness of what a healthy and balanced diet consists of. This is exacerbated by cultural beliefs that restrain people from changing their behaviours towards improved nutrition. Mozambique needs experts to address malnutrition. Therefore, various institutions offer training programmes in nutrition. All these … at higher levels and a lack of training facilities. With regard to knowledge development and training the Water and Sanitation Unit (WSU) of the Faculty of Science, University of Cape Coast is one of the actors with the potential to make a significant contribution to improved sanitation. That is the reason why strengthening capacity of the Water and Sanitation Unit (WSU) of the Faculty of Science, University of Cape Coast is one of three NICHE projects intended to contribute to institutional …
