Breathomics Facilities

Breathomics uses exhaled breath to study volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other biomarkers linked to metabolism and disease. These compounds provide insight into biological processes and may help identify biomarkers for diagnosis and monitoring.

Within a research setting, breath analysis enables the investigation of metabolic pathways, disease mechanisms, and potential biomarkers for diagnosis and monitoring. These compounds originate from both normal metabolism and disease-related changes, acting as biochemical fingerprints that reflect the functional state of organs such as the lungs, kidneys, and liver.

As a non-invasive approach, breath analysis offers a patient-friendly alternative to blood sampling or tissue biopsies. Within NUTRIM’s research infrastructure, this work is supported by advanced analytical facilities and technologies, including GC–MS, PTR–MS, and real-time breath analysis platforms.
