Multi Factor Authentication
By activating Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), an extra layer of security is added to the login process for both staff and students. This makes logging in from both the office and home even safer. MFA adds an additional step to the login process.
MFA is enabled for:
- Web-based UM services, such as Intranet, Student Portal, Canvas, and SAP SuccessFactors
- VPN: secure network connection with the university (staff only)
- Virtual workspaces (SDA for students and VDI for staff)
After logging in with your UM username and password, you will be prompted to use the MFA method you have set up for your account.
Authentication via SMS or phone call will no longer be supported
Due to announced changes to Microsoft’s authentication process, UM will update the Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) process for all users (UM employees and students) as of 1 February 2027.
Currently, you can still use an SMS code or phone call as an authentication method. These methods are less secure and will no longer be supported within UM from 1 February 2027.
Action required: set up Microsoft Authenticator
If you are currently not using Microsoft Authenticator or a similar app for MFA authentication then you will need to configure this now.
Therefore, download Microsoft Authenticator, set up the app and change it to your primary authentication method. This will allow you to continue signing in securely to all UM systems after 1 February 2027.
