Nuno Malheiro do Carmo, alumnus MA European Public Affairs

I have always questioned the importance of the European Union, especially as I was born and brought up in a small European country. Still, no matter how sceptical one might be, the EU’s importance and emergence as a single actor cannot be denied, and the European Public Affairs masters programme appeared to offer a vast insight regarding all the processes of European integration; I was not wrong.

The main reason I applied was its practice-orientated approach. All the simulations, debates, and presentations are vital, and indeed the best way of preparing one for the real working world, mainly composed of group work. A lot of people still have doubts about what exactly they wish to pursue in their careers, and having some practical knowledge will help you develop your passion for the area, and together with the internship at the end you will also gain some vital work experience.I was expecting a very organised course, and in fact all the modules fit perfectly into each other. We are all familiar with the complexity of the EU and of its people, and the truth is that the throughout the different modules all the different topics are dealt with, and everything flows very naturally.Another very important point is the close cooperation with the EIPA. A professional input can be very important, and offer a completely different view. I found this to be very appealing, as people have a lot of knowledge of the European Union, and even if professional, they are very friendly and make you feel comfortable.Maastricht was recommended by a friend’s father, and I must say I can’t thank him enough. The city is beautiful and cosy; the teachers are very friendly and willing to help, and even if at times the programme can be demanding, I really feels as if I am learning, and getting ready for the job-world.
