GSBE Seminar Thorsten Pachur (TU München/Max Plank Institute for Human Development)
Thorsten Pachur is professor for Behavioral Research Methods at the TUM School of Management. Thorsten investigates adaptive cognition, that is, how the psychological mechanisms underlying thinking, reasoning, and decision making are shaped by the structure of the environment. A key idea is that successful decision making can arise from the intelligent use of simple strategies—heuristics—that exploit regularities in the environment. Thorsten’s research covers decision making under risk and judgment under uncertainty and he is also interested in the role of intuition and how decision making develops across the lifespan. In his research, Thorsten employs an integrative multi-method approach that includes behavioral experiments, computational modeling, process tracing (e.g., eye tracking), and neuroimaging.

GSBE Seminar Klaus Miller (HEC Paris)
Klaus Miller joined the Marketing Department at HEC Paris as an Assistant Professor of Marketing and Hi! Paris Chairholder for the Study of Artificial Intelligence in Business and Society in Fall 2021. His research interests meet at the interface between empirical quantitative marketing, management economics, and information systems. Specifically, his research is concerned with pricing, advertising, and customer management issues in the digital economy. Methodically, his research is based on quantitative empirical modeling, applied econometrics, distributed statistical computing, causal machine learning, as well as large-scale field- and online-experiments. Klaus research has been published in top-tier academic (e.g., the Journal of Marketing Research, the Journal of Product Innovation Management, or the International Journal of Research in Marketing), as well as management-oriented journals. In his research projects, he often collaborates with the industry to answer research questions at scale. At HEC Paris, Klaus teaches Artificial Intelligence in Marketing in the MBA, as well as a Quantitative Marketing Science Course in the Grande École Program and the Ph.D. program.

GSBE Seminar Lijia Tan (Eindhoven University)
Lijia's research interest is in the area of Behavioral Operations Management. She conducts laboratory experiments to observe human decisions and uses the data to test her behavioral modes in Operations Management. Her research topics cover auction mechanisms, supply chains contracts, and individual decisions under uncertainty. She is also interested in human decisions in complex situation and the interactions between human decision makers and decision support systems, for example, the interactions between production planners and production planning systems.

Memories about failed grant applications
Failure is part of life, but not something academics talk about often.
