We have the received sad news that our student Daniele Crivellaro passed away on 20 February, aged 22.

Daniele came to Maastricht three years ago to join the BA European Studies programme at FASoS. Being passionate about history, politics and Europe, he instantly knew it was the right choice for him.

In class, Daniele did not let himself or his classmates get away with an easy answer. Without dominating, he stimulated everyone to think critically, using his talent to do so very kind-heartedly. His friends remember Daniele as a wonderful person with a rich sense of humour. He loved arts, music and movies and was always eager to share his enthusiasm with others.

Daniele deeply enjoyed his internship in the European Parliament. He felt it enabled him to understand how the EU really works. His colleagues there spoke warmly of him, praising his teamwork and willingness to help co-workers. He especially enjoyed drafting speeches, and once said “words cannot express how satisfying it was to assist with the Proposal for establishing a Space Programme … knowing that, in my own small way, I had contributed to the project.” His death came as a great shock to his colleagues.

Daniele Crivellaro

A place of remembrance has been dedicated to Daniele in room 0.002 Grote Gracht 80-82, with a book of condolences that we hope will provide a place of reflection for those who need it.

If you need support as a result of Daniele’s demise, FASoS staff and the student psychologists at Student Service Centre are there to help you. Please do not hesitate to contact Pia Harbers (student adviser) via +31 43 3884983 or the secretariat of student guidance at the SSC via +31 43 3885212. You can also contact the Student Chaplaincy at InnBetween (+31 43 3885310 or petra.kormendy@maastrichtuniversity.nl).
