I love engaging with the community and build capacity for initiatives that create a better and greener environment for students and beyond. As the Chair of the Green Office, I coordinate the Green Network, a collaboration of student-led groups across all six UM faculties and support SUM2030. I’m excited to contribute towards the sustainability goals at UM and I look forward to seeing the achievements we will accomplish together.

Meet Regina

Hi! :) My name is Regina, and I’m currently doing my master's in Work and Organisational Psychology and I came to Maastricht all the way from Hungary. I like solving problems, organizing information, managing data and emails, and most importantly, collaborating with others.

At SUM2030, I started as a student assistant, helping with communication tasks such as newsletters, the sustainability blog, and the Sustainable Challenge and I also work in liaison with the Green Office. I am constantly amazed by the great community at UM that is doing so much for sustainability, and I’m truly happy to be part of this amazing team!

Just starting to ride a bike can feel a bit overwhelming, but the bike workshops have been supporting countless students in taking charge of their bike maintenance. Starting in September, the bike workshop is looking for a new leader! Ready to take on the role?

Are you passionate about bikes? Do you have experience with bike repairs, like changing tires or tightening brakes? If so, we want YOU!!

Starting in September, we’re looking for a Bike Repair Workshop Leader to help students learn how to maintain and fix their bikes. As the workshop leader, you’ll have access to a dedicated space at the Sustainability Hub, complete with spare parts and tools. The Green Office will support and promote your events, and you’ll have the flexibility to shape the workshops in your own style.

Interested in what the workshops are like? Pop by in the upcoming weeks and meet Wilder, our current workshop leader, who will guide you through the space, share helpful tips, and show you the ropes. Some prior knowledge of bike maintenance is needed, but don’t worry—Wilder will help you get up to speed with all the tricks of the trade!

The KAN x Green Office x Artistri x FPM Christmas Market lit up the Sustainability Hub on 8 December with handmade gifts, a bake sale, a clothing swap, and cozy hot drinks. Visitors enjoyed festive vibes, DIY crafts, and a bike repair workshop—all while supporting a great cause.

The Sustainability Hub came alive with festive energy during a vibrant Christmas Market event that perfectly embodied the spirit of community, creativity, and sustainable shopping on December 8th. Organized through a collaborative effort by KAN , Green Office, Artistri, and FPM, the market drew approximately 200 enthusiastic participants eager to explore unique products.

The event featured an impressive array of 18 vendors showcasing a diverse range of handmade and sustainable products, including:

  • Art prints and stickers
  • Handcrafted Christmas cards and bookmarks
  • Artisan jewelry
  • Crochet items
  • Handmade candles
  • and many more!

Beyond the vendor market, participants enjoyed several engaging activities, like a bake sale offering delicious treats, a poster sale and a winter clothing swap where over 120 items were sold and 140 clothing items were swapped out!

The atmosphere was warm and cosy, with community members mingling, sharing conversations, and enjoying some refreshments. The event successfully created a festive environment that celebrated both creativity and sustainability, bringing people together in a meaningful and enjoyable way.

As part of the SUM2030 seed fund program Transition to a fossil-free society, the project "Shocks and the energy transition" is currently underway.

The path to sustainable energy is anything but smooth. The journey is subject to various shocks—unforeseen events that, while rare, can have significant impacts on the pace and direction of the transition. These shocks can range from geopolitical situations, such as wars and sabotage of critical infrastructure, to severe climate events like extreme heatwaves, droughts, or a combination of both. Additionally, abrupt trade conflicts can also pose major challenges.

This project brings together colleagues from various faculties, as well as external experts, to examine how such shocks can disrupt the energy transition and what their potential consequences might be. But it’s not just about external disruptions—energy transitions themselves can also give rise to shocks, like grid congestion, that could threaten progress.

To make the research more relevant and applicable, the project uses the Limburg region as a case study. By analyzing potential shock scenarios in this specific context, the team aims to understand how shocks can influence sustainability transitions and how societies can better prepare for and respond to these challenges. The insights generated from this research will be shared with experts and stakeholders through the UM's Transit Platform before summer.

If you are interested in this research, please contact the project leader Nicole Rijkens (n.rijkens@maastrichtuniversity.nl)!
