Prof. Tim Welting (CAPHRI) knew early on that he wanted to use his fundamental molecular knowledge to create societal impact. Today, he is just doing that through his research into osteoarthritis.

Even at a relatively young age, people can develop cartilage damage in their knees. This is usually caused by overuse, sports injuries or excess weight.

These people are often too young for a knee replacement. Therefore, Pieter Emans (CAPHRI) is researching a small implant that can replace the damaged cartilage. His goal is to help delay or even prevent osteoarthritis, and help people keep their own knee for longer.
