PhD training programmes at FHML/MUMC+
All FHML PhD candidates are encouraged and expected to engage in educational activities to further develop their competence, both in the specific research field and in terms of generic, transferable skills important for their future careers.
On this page you can find an overview of courses available to FHML PhD candidates, for whom many of these courses are free of charge. This educational offer allows you to choose from a wide range of courses, on campus as well as online. In consultation with your supervisory team, you can tailor your educational programme to your needs.

Academic writing & presenting
The English Academic Skills programme of the Language Centre will help you conduct your research and write your dissertation.
- PhD-1&2 Academic writing (beginner/advanced, preferred for PhDs based at UM/MUMC+)
- PhD-1&2 Critical writing online (beginner/advanced, preferred for external PhDs)
- PhD-P4 Presentation Skills
A maximum of 3 courses of the Language Center are free of charge in case you are employed or registered as FHML PhD candidate. No-show or late cancelling will mean charging of costs to your supervisor's budget. To register for the course using the FHML PhD budget please log in first, then select the course of your choice (the course offer at the bottom of the page gives you the group options), click to register and proceed to checkout by selecting the ‘My organisation pays’ option. In the dropdown menu, please select the ‘FHML/MUM+ PhD students – only for courses PhD-1, PhD-2, PhD-P’ option and fill in your P-number so FHML can check your eligibility for the free course. Complete the registration by clicking ‘pay now’. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via languagecentre@maastrichtuniversity.nl.
Mandatory trainings for all PhD candidates
The UM general PhD trainings are mandatory and consist of three courses: Research Ethics and Integrity, Open Science and Science Communication. These courses are obligatory for new PhD candidates.
These courses are free of charge.
Research integrity
SCIentific INtegrity – In-Depth course (SCIIN-ID)
This optional course is a highly valued follow up of the mandatory module on Research Ethics and Integrity.
Biomedical and clinical research skills and Modules FHML Master's Programmes
FHML/MUMC+ course offer (fees required):

- Basiscursus Regelgeving en Organisatie voor Klinisch onderzoekers (eBROK). Another option is to follow the e-learning course on this same topic at GCP Central.
Career and professional development
All PhD candidates, including external candidates, can make use of the online training offer of GoodHabitz, in the areas of productivity, inspirational leadership, communication, and health, safety & well-being. You can follow these courses at your own pace.
Additionally, for FHML PhD candidates who are employed at UM, the Talent Development team at UM offers a range of courses that are specifically aimed at PhD candidates, on topics such as:

- Career orientation
- Effective collaboration with your supervisory team
- Work-life balance
- Countering PhD perfectionism
They also offer individual career guidance and coaching on work-related problems. Olga Reneerkens and Hanneke Wessels, career counsellors and coaches, are there to help. Note this is only for FHML PhD candidates who are employed at UM. Your faculty or service centre will be charged half of the total costs.
