The Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience (FPN) is an international faculty with students and staff from diverse cultural backgrounds who are linked by their shared curiosity about the human brain. This curiosity drives us to explore the broad field of psychology from a biological and cognitive perspective. By using the Problem-Based Learning method of teaching we encourage a similar curiosity in our students by handing them the tools to discover the world of the human brain.

Op 8 juni zal professor Fred Zijlstra afscheid nemen van de Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience en zijn leerstoel Arbeidspsychologie. In zijn afscheidsrede zal hij terugkijken op het werk dat hem zo lang gefascineerd heeft. Wij ontmoetten hem in zijn kantoor om al een voorproefje te krijgen op deze terugblik.

Elia Formisano, hoogleraar Neural Signal Analysis aan de faculteit Psychologie en Neurowetenschappen, heeft onlangs een artikel gepubliceerd in Nature Neuroscience, in samenwerking met Bruno Giordano van de Université Aix-Marseille, Frankrijk, en Michele Esposito, Giancarlo Valente. De titel van het artikel is Intermediate acoustic-to-semantic representations link behavioural and neural responses to natural sounds.
En als je een beetje op mij lijkt, klinkt die titel nogal intimiderend. Dus sprak ik met professor Formisano over zijn bevindingen.

Wereldwijd zijn vrouwen in tbs-klinieken en andere vormen van forensische zorg in de minderheid. Slechts 10% van de Nederlandse patiënten opgenomen in de forensische zorg is vrouw, maar het aantal vrouwelijke patiënten neemt langzaamaan toe. Werken de bestaande behandelingen en meetinstrumenten, die zijn ontwikkeld voor mannelijke patiënten, wel net zo goed bij vrouwen? Nee, zo ontdekte prof. dr. Vivienne de Vogel. Bij vrouwelijke patiënten zijn de aard van het delict, de motieven én de behandelbehoeften anders. Wat betekent dat voor de forensische zorg?
