Sustainability in Action: February Highlights at UM

We are building a vibrant sustainability community where there’s always something happening! Whether you want to learn, connect, or take action, there are plenty of opportunities to get involved.

Take a look at the February highlights in sustainability to see what we’ve been working on:

Green Market at MUMC+: Connecting Sustainability and Community

On January 27th, in the heart of MUMC+, the Green Market brought together a wide range of hospital and sustainability initiatives to connect with UM students, hospital staff, university employees, and the wider Maastricht community. The event created an open space for meaningful conversations around sustainability, encouraging visitors to explore how they can contribute to a greener future.

The Green Office, represented alongside the FHML Green Team, actively promoted the Green Network and engaged attendees in discussions about sustainable practices within both the university and healthcare environment. The market served as an inspiring reminder that sustainability thrives through collaboration and shared action.

Getting to Know Sustainability

On February 6th, we hosted a Getting to Know Sustainability session, where Green Office members introduced themselves and shared their roles and ongoing projects. The evening offered insight into the people behind the initiatives and the passion driving sustainability at UM.

Green Team members spoke about their ambitions and the challenges they face, openly sharing what support they need to reach their goals. The presence of Sustainability Officer Jeroen Warnier further reinforced this collaborative spirit, as he actively showed his support and made himself available to offer guidance and assistance.

It was a warm and engaging evening that strengthened connections within the Green Network and highlighted the importance of working together to create meaningful change.

Sustainability Mixer

On February 12th, the Sustainability Mixer brought together around 70–80 students eager to contribute their ideas for the upcoming Sustainability Days. The event created a collaborative and welcoming environment where students felt encouraged to actively participate and share their perspectives.

Throughout the evening, students engaged in open and constructive dialogue, exchanging perspectives and developing concrete proposals for workshops, activities, and initiatives. Ideas were not only shared but expanded upon, as participants built on each other’s suggestions and explored how to translate them into realistic and impactful actions. The level of communication and willingness to listen stood out, reflecting a genuine collective commitment to sustainability within the university community.

After an intensive and productive session of brainstorming, the evening concluded with a well-deserved pizza gathering. The informal setting allowed conversations to continue in a relaxed atmosphere, strengthening connections and reinforcing the sense of community that underpins sustainability efforts at UM.

Not So Valentine’s Thrift Market

In the 28th of February, we also hosted a Not So Valentine’s Thrift Market. The event brought together around 15 local vendors who showcased handcrafted jewelry, sustainable sweaters, and a variety of unique, thoughtfully made items.

The market created a cozy and vibrant atmosphere, attracting many students and visitors who were curious to explore more conscious shopping options. Beyond being a place to buy meaningful gifts or second-hand treasures, the event encouraged reflection on sustainable consumption and supported small, creative entrepreneurs within the community.

It was a lively and enjoyable afternoon that combined sustainability, creativity, and community spirit in a truly special way.
