Jeroen Hendriks appointed new Professor of Nursing Science
Maastricht University (UM), Maastricht UMC+ (MUMC+) and the Care and Public Health Research Institute (CAPHRI) are delighted to announce the appointment of Jeroen Hendriks as Professor of Nursing Science, specializing in Integrated Care. This appointment, effective December 1st, marks a significant step in the hospital's ambition to advance nursing care under the leadership of the Department of Nursing. By fostering knowledge development in Integrated Care, the hospital aims to future-proof its nursing services.
Jeroen Hendriks, who completed his education and PhD at UM, returns to Maastricht after a successful ten-year career in Australia. His expertise in integrated care for cardiovascular conditions, specifically atrial fibrillation, which he further developed at the University of Adelaide and Flinders University in Adelaide, forms a valuable addition to the academic climate of MUMC+ and UM.
In his new position in the Department of Nursing at MUMC+, Hendriks will focus on developing and evaluating care models centred on Integrated Care, with nurses playing a central role. This chair complements the existing chairs in nursing science and emphasises the connection between the university's academic climate and clinical care in the hospital. Additionally, he will contribute to strengthening the infrastructure for nursing and multidisciplinary research in the hospital. At CAPHRI, one of UM's largest research institutes focusing on healthcare and public health innovation, he will work on further developing research into integrated care, particularly aimed at secondary healthcare.
"With Jeroen's arrival and appointment, we are taking an important step in strengthening our academic position and the connection between nurses and the latest insights in Integrated Care," says Marjolein Heemels, Director of Nursing at Maastricht UMC+. "This milestone underscores our ambition to be at the forefront of innovative, future-proof and patient-centred care and offers new opportunities to better connect care, education and research."
Hendriks himself is looking forward to his new role: "It's wonderful to return to Maastricht and contribute to innovation around new models of care while focusing on the academisation of nursing. Integrated care connects person-centred care, multidisciplinary care teams and technology. Nurses play an essential role in this."
This appointment strengthens the close collaboration between UM, MUMC+ and CAPHRI, aimed at improving healthcare through innovative research and education. It underlines the joint commitment to an innovative, future-proof care environment, where academically substantiated and evidence-based research are central, and new perspectives are offered for nursing careers. Through this collaboration, Jeroen will receive an honorary role within the Department of Health Services Research (HSR), which will reinforce connections with other Nursing Science faculties.
