Exploration into potential new role for the Bonbonnière as Maastricht’s ‘house for culture, science and society’

Maastricht institutions collaborate with municipality.

Several Maastricht institutions, including Maastricht University, are collaborating with the municipality of Maastricht to explore new possibilities for the Bonbonnière, the city’s former theatre. This is the result of an initial meeting between a number of local organisations. In addition to the municipality and UM, participants include representatives from MECC Maastricht, the Maastricht Convention Bureau, Theater aan het Vrijthof, the Elisabeth Strouven Fund, as well as various cultural institutions and hospitality businesses. This group, referred to as the ‘Friends of the Bonbonnière’, has agreed to contribute to a joint initiative by the municipality and UM to commission a study into possible future uses of the venue.

The study will assess whether transforming the Bonbonnière into a house for culture, science and society is feasible, both in terms of programming and operations. Concepts being considered include a mix of arts and culture, science, performing arts, symposia and small-scale conferences, as well as space for meetings, public debate and dialogue, with room for hospitality services.

The municipality aims to present several scenarios for a sustainable future of the Bonbonnière to the city council by November at the latest. The joint study by the municipality and UM will determine whether the concept of a house for culture, science and society will be one of these scenarios. The potential contributions of UM and the other ‘Friends of the Bonbonnière’ will also be explored as part of this process.
