Research projects

The project ‘Queering the Museum’ explores queer politics in contemporary Dutch and international art museums. Based on exhibition analysis, archival research, and interviews, I consider curatorial approaches of LGBT-themed art exhibitions, collections, and collaborative art projects on queer cultures. Specifically, my research examines the curatorial challenges when showcasing sexual and social minorities in art and the social relations created in these cultural institutions. Moreover, I study alternative curatorial approaches and artistic fabulations that care for LGBT+ communities and reimagine their institutional practices. Understanding the social effects and relations of these queer curatorial projects can tell us how diverse bodies and objects are assembled in a museum. It also tells us the possibility of imagining a queer museum that mobilizes gender and sex activism in cultural institutions. While the focus is on queer artistic and curatorial interventions, these inquiries respond to the broader debate on the social role of museum in contemporary society.
