Health Insurance

Below you can find an overview about what you need to know about health insurance before you come to the Netherlands.

Do you have an employment contract with Maastricht University?

  • You are covered by the Dutch public health coverage as of your starting date of your employment contract in the Netherlands.*
  • To benefit from this public coverage, you have to take out a contract for a “basiszorgverzekering” with one of the many health insurance providers in the Netherlands. You have up to 4 months after your starting date to conclude such a contract (which will then take effect retroactively). You have to have a BSN for registering with an insurance provider.
  • For the period between your departure from your home country until your starting date at Maastricht University; you will need to make sure you are adequately covered by means of a travel insurance / expat insurance. For citizens from other EU, EEA and treaty countries; you can perhaps rely on your EHIC for this period, you can check with your national insurance provider.

* If you are a cross-border worker and you are socially secured in your country of residence, different rules apply. Please see this page for more information.

KCIS will coordinate the necessary appointments for you to register as a resident to the Netherlands and to obtain a BSN, necessary to conclude a contract with an insurance provider for public health insurance.

Do you have a hospitality agreement?

  • The SVB (social security authority in the Netherlands) will decide whether you are a temporary resident or permanent resident to the Netherlands. Depending on the outcome of this assessment, you will fall either under the public scheme (permanent) or under the private health insurance scheme (temporary).
  • The assessment on the type of residence can only be applied for after you have arrived to the Netherlands, registered as a resident and obtained your BSN.
  • If you are staying less than 4 months in the Netherlands, you cannot register as a resident in the municipality and as per consequence, you will not need an insurance position assessment, you are not eligible for the public coverage and you will need to take out private insurances.

KCIS will coordinate the necessary appointments for you as a non-EU guests to register as a resident to the Netherlands and obtain a BSN. KCIS can guide you through the Insurance Position Assessment procedure with the SVB.
