Prof Georgi Verbeeck (G.J.M.)

Georgi Verbeeck is an Associate Professor of Modern History and Political Culture at Maastricht University and a parttime (Full) Professor of German History at the KU Leuven.  He is Director of Studies of the MA programs  'Politics and Society' (PS) and 'Arts, Literature and Society' (ALS) at FASoS.

Career history

Georgi Verbeeck (1961) joined the History Department of Maastricht University in 1998, first as an Assistant Professor and since 2012 as an Associate Professor of Modern History and Political Culture. He holds a BA in History (1981) and Philosophy (1982), an MA in History (1983), and a PhD in History (1991) from the University of Leuven. 

Georgi Verbeeck held research fellowships at the Institut für europäische Geschichte in Mainz (1988), the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1989 and 1991), and the University of Pretoria (2006). He was fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS) in Wassenaar (2012/13) and is currently fellow of the African Studies Centre (ASC) in Leiden. From 2011 through 2013 he co-directed the NWO funded international research project "Terrorscapes, Totalitarianism and Transnational Memory in Europe since 1989". Visiting professorships include the University of Stellenbosch (1996) and the University of Malaysia Sabah (2010 and 2012). 

Georgi Verbeeck is also a part-time full professor of German history at the University of Leuven.
